Justice InDeed has created do-it-yourself toolkits to empower Washtenaw County residents who wish to repeal racially restrictive covenants on their properties and within their subdivisions. Below you can find step-by-step guides for homeowners and renters.
If you are a homeowner who is not part of a homeowners’ association, please use the Homeowners' Guide to Repealing Racially Restrictive Covenants.
Note: A “homeowners’ association” or HOA is an organization with mandatory membership and dues that governs the way homeowners in a subdivision or gated community may use their property. It is different from a “neighborhood association,” which is a voluntary association.
If you are you a renter, please use the Renters' Guide to Repealing Racially Restrictive Covenants.
If you are a homeowner who is a member of a homeowners’ association (HOA), there is a different process for repealing an RRC. See Section 6 of the Discharge of Prohibited Restrictive Covenants Act. We do not think there are many, if any, Washtenaw County HOAs with racist covenants, but if you have one, feel free to e-mail us at JusticeInDeedMi@umich.edu for help repealing the RRC for your entire HOA.
We have attempted to make this process as simple as possible, but if you need assistance, please fill out this interest form or email us at JusticeInDeedMI@umich.edu.
